Osteopathic Care FAQs

What Is Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM)?

Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM) is a nationally recognized, board-certified specialty of osteopathic medicine that is board-certified through the AOA and the AOBNMM. Physicians in ONMM receive advanced training in the diagnosis, treatment and management of conditions affecting the neuromusculoskeletal system, with a strong emphasis on the inter-relationship of structure, function and overall health.

ONMM physicians are trained in residency programs accredited for ONMM/NMM-OMM (Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine / Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine). Using detailed hands-on evaluation and osteopathic manipulation (OMM/OMT), ONMM physicians identify areas of restricted motion, mechanical strain and structural inefficiency which may impede health and contribute to disease. Treatment aims reduce mechanical strain and facilitate optimal physiological regulation to support the body’s innate capacity to heal, adapt and function well.

In plain-language: ONMM is the specialty that focuses not only on treating musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, but on how restrictions in movement and structure can impede the body’s ability to regulate, recover, and perform. It bridges the hands-on structural/interventional skills of OMM with broad clinical management of neuromusculoskeletal disorders in all ages and in multiple settings (inpatient, outpatient, pediatric, surgical consults).

What conditions do you treat?
While osteopathic manipulation (OMM) can provide health benefits beyond the neuromusculoskeletal system, the most commonly treated conditions include:

  • Neck, back, and rib pain

  • Headaches and chronic migraine

  • Sciatica and radicular pain

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction

  • Joint pain and osteoarthritis

  • Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction or instability

  • Peripheral nerve entrapment (such as carpal tunnel)

  • Tendinitis, tendinopathy, and muscle strain

  • Post-surgical pain, stiffness, or scar-related restriction

  • Gait dysfunction or mobility issues

  • Spasticity and cervical dystonia

  • Pregnancy-related and postpartum pain

  • Infant feeding, neck, or movement difficulties

  • Pediatric and adolescent sports or overuse injuries

Do I need a referral?

Most patients do not need a referral to schedule.

However, some insurance plans require a referral for specialist visits. If this applies to your plan, we will help confirm it when verifying your benefits.
